Spain and Portugal were the final stop on my year-long (well, 11 months actually) around-the-world (rtw) trip that I took from July 1996 to June 1997. I arrived in Madrid in May, on an Aeroflot flight (it was the cheapest) from Kathmandu via Moscow (and a 17 hour layover on the floor of the Moscow airport). So it was quite a change.
Overall I spent 11 days in Portugal in between 7 weeks in Spain. I did a loop: Madrid, Granada, the Alpujara (southern slope of the Sierra Nevada), Seville, Portugal including Lisbon, Oporto and the Braganca area, and then back into Spain to finish with Santiago, Oviedo and the Picos de Europe, San Sebastian, the Pyrenees and finishing up in Barcelona.
