Olympic National Park: Solduc - High Divide - Hoh Valley

This was a four-day, three night backpack in Olympic National Park that took in took iconic regions: The High Divide and the Hoh Valley. Doing both meant a 4400 foot drop from the Divide to the Canyon, from 5400 feet at the pass across the High Divide, down to the river at 1000.

Bob and I did the hike in mid-September, 2009. We had sunshine and hot temperatures most of the trip. Fog came in the third afternoon and rain started after dark. But it stopped in time for breakfast and the hike out.

Some bushes were starting to turn fall colors and the blueberries and/or huckleberries were ripe and sweet in profusion up high. The dayhike up towards Mt Olympus was the only day we didn't carry backpacks, but given the 18 mile roundtrip and 4000 gained, it was probably our hardest day, and took 9.5 hours.
