Steens Mountain is in a remote part of southeast Oregon. It has a famous loop road, but this was not open yet due to heavy snow when I visited. But you could up quite a ways so I walked the road to the Steens Mtn Crest, east viewpoint, a 15 mile roundtrip.
One of Steen's famous U-shaped valleys.
Little Blitzen Creek.
Walking up the closed road, the northern part. I started at the overlooks, which is as far as you could drive
There was snow above, but they had plowed it. The road was still very soft here.
Strange snow shapes.
Junction where you head for the East Viewpoint.
Looking south towards Steens Summit, only 10 or 20 feet higher.
The Alvord Desert.
