Hat Point is the highest point on the Oregon side of Hells Canyon at nearly 7000 feet. The name comes from a cowboy hat that blew over the edge and lodged in a tree for many years a long time ago. There is a 22 miles gravel road from the small town of Imnaha to reach Hat Point. Parts of it are very steep, but most of it is moderate. There were thunderstorms and hail as I was driving up, but it stopped before I got there. Entering the national recreation area 5 miles up the road - the steep part is mostly over by now.
