Castle Crags are an outcrop in northern California just southwest of Mt. Shasta. On a return drive home, I was going to camp in its campground, but when I discovered that the Pacific Crest Trail passes through it, I decided to hike in a short distance and backpack. The weather was sweltering - about 110 a little ways south in Redding. At the start of my hike, it had cooled to a balmy 97.

Mountains to the south and west - the Marble Mountains?
The next day, driving home on US 97 just north of the town of Weed - Mt. Shasta.
